fifty3 are proud to be associated with a number of emerging artistes featured here and to have championed two who are now making it big in the mainstream, Kate Walsh and Ingrid Michaelson. You’ll find links to all these artistes below and we’d be delighted to receive any feedback from you once you’ve had a listen, just contact us here. Finally, there are some other links to mainly unsigned bands we know and love.
| Revere Quite simply one of the finest and most original bands on anyone's planet. Revere's music defies the descriptive powers of rock journalism, blending elements of gypsy marches, klezmer, post rock, film scores and gospel into a truly unique sound. Live, Revere perform as an enchanting acoustic band and as a dynamic, fully electric 8-piece. The intensity, drama and passion of a Revere live performance just has to be experienced. Highlights over the past 12 months include selling out the Union Chapel, playing Glastonbury and releasing the wonderful DVD single, The Escape Artist, recently championed by Radio 6's Tom Robinson. | Andrew Morris Andrew is a gifted songwriter, compelling vocalist and consummate live performer, appearing both solo and with his excellent backing band. A criminal lawyer by day, Andrew was born in Australia and now resides in Surbiton. It may not be Sydney but it's a lot handier for Waterloo. Andrew's songs have an immediacy and warmth yet real depth too. He played at Glastonbury in 2008 and was also featured on a Hotly Tipped compilation by iTunes Essentials. His new EP Longbeach was released in March 2009 when Andrew was invited to play at the Marillion Fest in Holland by the headliners themselves! The EP features 5 new songs, hallmarked by strong tunes and accessible lyrics. Andrew Morris on MySpace |
| Morton Valence A fascinating band on the cusp of greatness. Their magnificent concept album, Bob and Veronica Ride Again, released in May 2009, is one you want to listen to over and over, from start to finish, without skipping a single track. It is quite the perfect antidote to the ubiquitous iPod Shuffle and it deserves to be huge. The album is accompanied by a charming, witty and sometimes crazy novella and was financed by the band's own fans who bought shares in the project. True band champions them all! Lay the adjectives to rest and simply listen. Morton Valence on MySpace |
| Susie Clarke Susie rose to prominence last year as runner-up from 40,000 entrants on the MTV Get Seen Get Heard unsigned show. From her distinctive soulful vocals to her wonderful songwriting, Susie stands head and shoulders above many of her far more celebrated peers. Her debut acoustic EP features melodic songs dressed with heart-on-sleeve lyrics. Recently Susie has taken a break from performing live to write new material and work out a brand new musical direction, promising a step away from her acoustic roots and embracing a blisteringly hot live band. Expect passionate songs and infectious grooves, laced with Susie's unmistakable vocals. Susie Clarke on MySpace |
| The Mayfly Trio The Mayflies started life as two friends trying to find new ways through old sounds in a stop over in Edinburgh. Back in London, two became three and their blend of quirky, soulful songwriting and dynamic performance began to take shape. Aurelie, Dan and Chris set about extracting as much rhythm and harmony as possible from their unassuming line up of vocals, guitar and bass. The result is a highly original and eclectic musical mix topped by Aurelie's sparkling vocals. The Mayflies are currently creating some wonderful recordings, working with local producer, Mike Greenway (more of whom below). Mayfly Trio site |
| Mike Greenway SW London songwriter, composer & producer, Mike Greenway, has a natural capacity for empathising with other musicians, singers and writers. His primary focus is to identify the essential individuality of the artiste - their voice, and to create songs with them which exploit this originality. Mike's production expertise draws on new developments in popular music, while blending influences from the best of the past. Mike is currently working with three artistes we strongly recommend : The Mayfly Trio (listed above), young jazz-soul singing sensation, Annie-Grace Smith, and accomplished finger-style guitarist and singer-songwriter, Dave Moon. You can listen to sample tracks here. Mike Greenway's site |
| Launderette Poets The wonderfully named Launderette Poets wash whiter than Wordsworth, or your money back! The band showcases the outstanding songs and musicianship of Marissa Claughan, Patrick Gradwell and Craig Steer. The Yorkshire based trio met while studying music at university and started writing songs together, crafting sweet melodies, thoughtful lyrics and subtle arrangements. Musically and lyrically Launderette Poets bring depth and sincerity to their songwriting, drawing on their disparate musical backgrounds to great effect. Live, the band create a powerful and compelling sound with plenty of light and shade, highlighting Marissa's pure vocals and haunting cello. Launderette Poets on MySpace |
| Kate Walsh Arguably the brightest star to have emerged from a plethora of UK singer-songwriters in recent years, Kate Walsh is the inspiration behind Band Champions. She hit the headlines in Spring 07 when her locally recorded and self financed album Tim's House went to No 1 on iTunes, eclipsing Take That and Elton John no less. It marked a real coming-of-age in both a musical and emotional sense from a girl who wears her heart on her sleeve and invites you to touch the very beat. Kate writes and performs hauntingly beautiful songs with a maturity and finesse beyond her years. Live she is at ease mixing homespun Folk Club chat with the ability to command rapt attention. Kate's voice is quite amazing, coping with high and low registers with consummate ease. The girl does innocent and sweet, a hint of smoky and sexy, breathy yet controlled. Her guitar work is confident, moving smoothly from delicate to strident, but it is the quality of her songwriting that really shines through. Falling in and then out of love are recurring themes but the trick remains in the telling, in an ability to share her intimacies with an open heart and connect with her audience. Kate releases her new album this summer. We can't wait! Kate Walsh on MySpace |
| Ingrid Michaelson If a claim to fame was ever deserved, Ingrid's comes gold-plated. Officially the world's biggest selling unsigned artiste, with a million singles and 200,000 albums plus a front page article in the Wall Street Journal, Ingrid encapsulates the triumph of true talent. The Staten Island singer-songwriter first came to the attention of fifty3 in 2005. At that time Ingrid was playing New York piano bars and now she's a genuine star on the US music scene, headlining shows coast to coast and beginning to tour in Europe. Ingrid's meteoric career was nurtured by Myspace but she got her really big break when one of her songs was used in an episode of the medical soap, Grey's Anatomy (which interestingly stars Kate Walsh, but not our one!) The show went on to feature three more songs, including one specially commissioned. Her album Girls & Boys is packed with fabulous songs with great melodies and brilliant lyrics, a pattern continued by her follow-up, Be OK. Live, Ingrid has great vocal strength and variety and her between-song patter is genuinely funny and totally disarming. 30 million Myspace plays and counting can't be wrong either.

| Esther O'Connor A young Scottish singer who will soon be making waves nationally. Esther's current single, Lost Innocence, is an instant classic with a great tune and instrumentation reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac in their Rumours heyday. Watch the lovely accompanying video too.
